I agree, RAR was widely used by pirates because it made splitting large files easy to split and concatenate, which was useful for sharing stuff on floppy disks. Actually, even a few years after the arrival of OSX, people would widely use other formats, starting with Stuffit and RAR - a heritage from pre-OSX times, being a pirate or not has never gad anything yo do with it, these legends already did the rounds when a 56k modem was the best consumers could get. MacOS has built-in zip and other archiving and compression formats since the beginning of OSX.
